The good: The desk staff were really friendly. When I checked in, the staff were very friendly. We never had a problem finding parking behind the hotel. The Archer House River Inn occupies more than a central location in Northfield. Checking out was the same process.
Take Hwy 19 east to downtown. The location of Archer House is very nice, and we enjoyed the two restaurants we tried in the hotel. Archer House has a ton of character and made our mini-vacation to visit relatives more enjoyable and more of a fun and memorable adventure than staying at a 'big box' chain hotel. There wasn't a coffeepot in the room and they only served complimentary coffee in the lobby for a small window of time. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
Once again, if you travel alot and are used to staying at the Ritz, in order to appreciate the Archer House you will need to come down off your high horse. How can these wonderful people get any less than 5 stars? Overall, it's a great place to stay, except for one major thing which is why I am only giving Archer House three stars: the security. The pub food was mediocre at best. Make yourself at home in one of the 36 air-conditioned guestrooms. Occupying a 4-story historic building, the hotel was remodeled in 2010. The bed was laughably uncomfortable both my wife and I woke up with intense backaches.

Choose a suite to reserve a king or queen bed with a large sitting area, and large soaking tub or whirlpool tub. I chose to stay at Archer House because of its historical value, and the fact that it is supposedly a haunted former brothel. Door had an actual metal key which is fine , but it took some doing each time to lock the door when we would leave the room.
In spring 2011 its newest renovation was completed. Despite the age of the hotel from 1877 our room was up to date with a flat screen and modern design. It's in a great location in downtown, and within easy walking distance of Carleton. Todd does an amazing job running the place. Getting There: Northfield is just off of Hwy 35. My room was up on the fourth floor, and the elevator doesn't go up that far, so I had to take my suitcase up a scary staircase to the third floor where there are only three rooms. The Indian food was better than average.
